Discussion: Technical versus fundamental analysis


Oliver Prenn will attend the Meeting and will give a lecture on "Success on the stock market - Technical versus fundamental analysis". There is no general formula for successful investments in capital markets. However, an in-depth analysis of the investment seems to be the basic precondition for a profound and long-term success.

Two schools of thought collide

Technical analysis, a method of evaluating securities by relying on the assumption that market data, such as charts of price, volume, and open interest, can help predict future (usually short-term) market trends.

Versus fundamental analysis: This investment strategy involves evaluating a stock by examining the company, especially its operations and its financial condition. Here we look at several valuation methods, factoring in price/earnings ratio, PEG, dividend yields, book value, price/sales ratio, and return on equity.

Technical analysis acts on the maxim "The market is always right", while fundamental analysis focuses on the "intrinsic" value of the stock that can be achieved on the market. For both, the strategic and the private investor, following questions rise: Which one to trust and which one to use.

Selected Investment experts will clearly give an impression on the opportunities and limits of both methods, focussing mainly on case studies of the Austrian Stock Market. The event will be concluded by the:
